Summary

Schools are always trying to find new space or create different learning areas but always within a tight budget. In the past the solution to this was generally the use of portakabins which were often cold and drafty in winter and not a pleasant learning environment. Today however we feel we offer a much more modern and pleasing alternative. In this situation we were contacted by the school with the need for a new a classroom for their expanding school.
They had several possible sites within their grounds in which the building could be located but they were not sure on a design so we would help in this area as much as possible. The biggest difference between building for a school rather than a private individual is that it isn't the decision of one person however we are experienced in the field and knew what to expect.

Details

To assist in the design aspect and make the most of the sites they had available, we created a different design for each of the sites they had available. After much deliberation they settled on the design you see here. The site on which it is build slopes away at the back and the school asked if the views could be kept from the front. The large windows and the front and rear of the building allow for this providing not only views from within the building but also when looking through it from the playground.
When choosing the design, we had to provide the staff and the school governors with our initials sketches. As it is not the decision of one person we had to provide plenty of information and design ideas to these groups. Some governors even took the time to come and visit us at Grand Designs Live Exhibition to see one of our studios in situ which is always a great help.
To minimise the impact of having a studio built on students, we constructed this building during the summer holidays so as to reduce any stresses or distractions.
This building is perfect for use all year round, additional features include high performance glazing to stop solar gain. This stop the building over heating on hot summer days. To keep the building warm in winter, wall mounted convection radiators were installed. Due to the building's exceptional thermal properties nothing more was needed to provide a good teaching environment no matter what the weather. External waterproof socket were also installed and to make the most of those warm summer days, 3.6m bifolding doors were requested on the front allowing the whole front of the building to be opened up.
A very versatile and beautifully finished product.
