Note: Indicated sound reduction levels are approximate, and will depend on several factors such as the SIP Panel thickness, internal fixtures selected and the cladding material utilised.
Individual material thicknesses may vary slightly, and are indicative only.

Additional acoustic enhancement can be achieved by incorporating thicker core SIP panels – 125mm (65dB reduction), or 150mm (67dB reduction) with prices available on request.

Disclaimer: All figures are provided as a guide and are approximate, and can vary slightly depending on building specification (cladding), configuration, size and layout.
Notes
* Windows are considered fixed and non-opening. Opening windows will negatively effect acoustic performance, and will necessitate other acoustic materials such as acoustic curtains to counter the loss.
** Values based on screw pile foundation with a SIP floor with appropriate acoustic treatment.
*** Concrete slab can be utilised if required but at significant additional cost. Priced separately.
**** A thicker 150mm SIP roof can restrict internal headroom to less than our standard minimum of 2.1m, if a 2.5m overall structure height above adjacent ground level is required to comply with Permitted Development regulations. Available headroom will need to be carefully considered or Planning Permission obtained.

Note: The measurement of decibels is directly correlated to distance – doubling the distance means a halving in decibels. However, because the decibel is converted from pressure using a logarithmic ratio, a halving in decibels is equal to a reduction of 6dB.

Quiet Zone (10–40 dB)
10 dB – Nature’s whisper: breathing, soft leaves
20 dB – Secrets and ticking clocks
30–40 dB – Library-level; fridge hum, quiet office

Everyday Volume (50–70 dB)
50 dB – Gentle rainfall and relaxed conversations
60 dB – Typical talk and mellow background music
70 dB – Household machines and busy streets

Loud & Attention-Grabbing (80–100 dB)
80 dB – City traffic, hairdryers, loud alarms
90 dB – Power tools and lawn equipment
100 dB – Nightclubs, motorcycles, jackhammers

Danger Zone (110–140+ dB)
110 dB – Chainsaws and live rock concerts
120 dB – Sirens and thunder, pain threshold begins
130-140+ dB – Fireworks, gunshots, rocket launches

Soft Practice (20–50 dB)
Harp plucking, quiet violin, flute
Gentle piano passages
Ideal for late-night practice

Moderate Performance (60–80 dB)
Standard piano, acoustic guitar, clarinet
Violins and cellos at typical volume
Standard studio monitoring levels

High-Energy Playing (90–110 dB)
Forte piano, loud violin, brass instruments
Drum kits from soft to heavy playing
Loud electric guitar amplifiers

Concert Power (120 dB and beyond)
Rock concerts
Pipe organs at full strength
Extreme brass and drum sessions
A garden music studio provides you with a dedicated space in which to make music, freeing up precious room in your home that would normally be taken up by instruments and other musical equipment. Alternatively, it can save you money on studio rental costs and travel. If you’re a peripatetic music teacher, for example, imagine having the perfect space where students could come for lessons rather than you going to them.
All our garden spaces have natural soundproofing because of the layered building insulation we use. However, we also offer five enhanced levels of acoustic performance with our bronze, silver, gold, platinum and platinum plus packages.
Whether you’re looking to create one or more music practice rooms, or you wish to install a recording studio, we can help you create effective soundproofing between rooms as well as ensuring that minimal sound leaks to the outside world.
Good sound proofing is so important, regardless of your building’s use or location. Current building standards are very stringent ensuring such factors as good thermal insulation and ventilation. Sound proofing, however, is poorly addressed in many contemporary new builds. Our garden studios are different as they are inherently sound insulated thanks to their layered structure. In addition, we provide our knowledge and expertise in enhanced sound insulation and acoustic performance to offer a comprehensive range of solutions to suit every requirement and budget.

Thanks to the structural make-up of our buildings they perform extremely well in terms of sound absorption and sound proofing. The layered structure and differing densities of each SIP panel, (which form the walls ceilings and floors), block out a wide a spectrum of noise. Internally we add plasterboard and externally we install a breathable water proof membrane, timber battens and either kiln dried (fibrous) timber cladding or a polymer render. All these components enhance sound insulation.
Whether you are installing a music room for your children’s drum set, a home office or family cinema room, sound proofing is going to be important to you and possibly your neighbours! Similarly you may live near a very busy noisy road or railway or be installing a specialised building such as a recording studio. Whatever your scenario, acoustic enhancement may well be desirable if not crucial. Acoustic solutions are complex and endless, so we have created five packages scaling from basic sound proofing enhancements to high tech acoustic performance. If needed, we will cherry pick across the packages to tailor your building to your exact requirement.
You’ll find our garden music rooms maintain a comfortable temperature all year round. Special insulation panels help keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. We also offer full climate control that enables you to heat, cool and control the humidity of your garden music room so you can keep your instruments and equipment in peak condition. Unlike many air conditioning systems, our climate control system uses a ground mounted external compressor so it is runs quietly and won’t transfer noise through the building or disturb your music making.
Whatever you wish to achieve, you’ll find that Garden Spaces staff have the expertise to make it happen and you can expect total attention to detail from planning permissions through to completion.

For all acoustic upgrades, switches and sockets will be surface mounted unless specified otherwise. Strip lighting (surface mounted) perform better than recessed down-lights.
The windows are acoustically always the weakest point of any building. To maximise acoustic performance we recommend minimising window/aperture area.
Note: We advise using our unique internal or external porch entry system (incorporating an internal acoustic door) to give best performance, and maximum light and flexibility.
Low frequency noise is always the worst offender acoustically in terms of noise transmission, and acoustic enhancement may only have limited effectiveness with equipment such as drums.
Furnishing the room will improve acoustic performance.
If performance is not deemed satisfactory, it may be necessary to add post build enhancement such as heavy serge curtains over some, or all window apertures.
A sloping internal ceiling may enhance acoustic performance, as a true square box is deemed to be weak acoustically. The square box scenario can be improved by the use of furnishing, and also the use of commonly available post build acoustic items such as: tegular tiles, acoustic corner traps, wedges, cubes and ‘egg box’ foam.
