We predominantly opt for the ground screw foundations solution technology as our preferred foundations solution. This system gives us a fast and flexible solution for the majority of our requirements. We have a number of different size ground screws to choose from for all different types of ground conditions with the additional option for an adjustable screw head to be use in areas near trees where roots would normally make a project non-viable without huge cost implications.
With our core lightweight SIPs structure and our improved ring beam solution these work in perfect harmony with the ground screw foundation system and provide a stable platform for your garden space requirement.
Ground screws are installed by our preferred specialist supplier and every screw is tested to meet a predetermined set torque and loading requirement. We have worked closely with our engineers and building control specialists to ensure we meet the required standard on every project.
Most projects can have the site locations mapped out, and full ground screw foundation system installed in one day or less.
Sites with sloping gardens would normally cause an issue with traditional build systems. Ground screw can easily overcome this with longer screws that extend from the ground to create a level platform for the garden space to be installed.
Unlike traditional foundation systems there is no concrete used for ground screws, with concrete now the second most consumed substance on Earth after water. On average, each year 3 tonnes of concrete is consumed for every person on the planet.
We are used to seeing patios and old concrete slabs in place where your new garden space will be located. To remove these can be a costly and labour intensive. In a lot of situations we have the ability to leave these in place and core drill holes through the concrete, allowing the ground screws to be installed and saving all the additional costs for removal.
We are fully aware that ground screws will not work in every situation and we have a number of other solutions to cater for almost all scenarios that might occur, whether that be due to the use of your garden space, or due to unusual or awkward ground conditions.
In some circumstances, like extreme tree roots or sandy and gravel type ground conditions it would be likely that we would opt as an alternative to the ground screw foundation system and use a plinth or pad foundation system. This would normally consist of a compacted crushed aggregate in an excavated hole with an adjustable plinth or a solid rubber pad placed on the top. These types of systems while not normally penetrating as deep as the ground screw do provide a much wider spread of the loads of your garden building.
This system can be used in conjunction with an existing concrete base, if it is deemed suitable. The new garden space can then extend beyond the original footprint of the concrete slab.
From a cost and environmental point of view we would normally only use concrete as a last resort but there are occasions when this will need to be used. We would normally see concrete rafts or strip foundations being used where very heavy machinery or equipment is being installed for example – in a workshop application, heavy weight racks in a gym or a hot tub being installed.
