Summary

Mr Chinnock wished to build a garden office but was concerned that this would mean 'going through planning', as his property is in an 'area of outstanding beauty'. The vast majority of our garden studios are indeed built without planning because (due to their design, size and height) they are categorised as 'permissible development'. For areas of outstanding beauty, the rules are different and so on behalf of our client we did some investigating.

Details

There are stringent rules regarding the extending and developing of properties within areas of outstanding beauty. However, one is allowed to install a garden building if it is smaller than 15msq and sits behind and within 20m of the main property. Knowing this our designer got to work. An existing shed was removed to make space for this compact office, with views across the garden to the house and integral storage for garden tools etc. The external door to the storage room is clad in western red cedar to blend seamlessly with the rest of the facade. All door and window frames are powder coated aluminium with 'A' rated argon filled toughened glazing. Being of SIPs construction, our studios are exceptionally thermally efficient but to boost the temperature on colder days underfloor heating was installed with touch screen thermostatic controls. We also installed aluminium blinds as shown, plus 3 double power sockets, 3 Ethernet sockets, internal and external LED down lights and a strip light in the store area.
