Summary

This client wished to build a bespoke office in her back garden on the site of two sheds. Mrs Linden had seen another Garden Spaces studio at a friend's property and after assessing the market chose to proceed with us. Maximising natural light was a key design requirement as she worked as a photographer and author. Other important functional design details included large sliding doors that opened both ways and fibre optic broadband to ensure the ability to send large data files at a speed commensurate with that of the house network.

Details

Before building could begin we cleared and levelled the area. As the photographs show, the front façade is dominated by smooth-sliding powder coated aluminium doors (3m wide) which open both way. A skylight measuring 1200mm by 600mm was also included which throws a remarkable amount of light into the room regardless of time of day. Eight internal and four external Aurora LED down lighters completed the picture giving fabulous illumination around the clock.
The build site sloped slightly, being lower towards the front of the studio. To compensate for this the concrete pile foundations were built up accordingly and two beautifully clad steps created across the front. The change in ground level is only evident on close inspection. The side profile of the studio has been carefully designed with an obtuse triangle of shadow board (painted with weatherproof paint) camouflaging this change of ground level thus retaining a perfect clean-line finish to the side cladding.
The Lindens' broadband provider came to connect and lay fibre optic cable from the house to the studio. Connecting this to the studio and all other electrical works were then carried out by our fully certified electrician who installed a wall mounted convector heater, eight double power sockets, one telephone socket, two internet sockets for fibre optic cable and a consumer unit (with RCD protection). This bespoke studio, intricately clad in Western Red Cedar offers great office with great light, great connectivity and, we hope, great potential.
