Summary

The MacRaes wanted to build their own bespoke gym at the bottom of their garden, an area which they could lose with relative impunity. Incorporating a large expanse of decking would give them additional usable space whether that be stretching off after a gym session or relaxing with friends and a glass of wine. The family were away on holiday for the majority of this build, but with the design detail thrashed out, this did not pose a problem.

Details

The design is based on our Helix studio with a number of bespoke elements and additional features. One requirement was that the roof be reinforced to enable a heavy punch bag to be suspended from the ceiling. In a similar vein we have, on many occasions, incorporated special rafters within our ceilings from which to integrated TRX Suspension Training equipment. The beauty of our SIPs (structured insulated panels) studios aside from their exceptional thermal performance, is flexible modular construction which is clean swift and bespoke, imposing minimal impact on your life. (I know, I am currently extending a Victorian house and it is painful!) The contemporary glazed corner, formed by two sets of bifolds allows the internal space to double as it blends seamlessly, across a low profile threshold, with the external decked area. The cladding is cedar; an enduring FSC kiln dried wood, grown in cooler climes to give its fine, even, knot-free grain. It can be oiled annually to retain the vibrant golden hues or left to silver gracefully over time. Internally a few notable features include a Hitachi Shirokuma A+ climate control unit, LED downlights, three double power sockets and integral blinds within the powder coated aluminium bifolds. Overall a fabulous multifunctional yet unimposing addition to the family's garden.
