Summary

It is so important when your work is creative, that you have the right space, the right light and the right frame of mind. This client wished to remove the pressure of a long commute to her existing art studio and replace that with a convenient stroll down her garden to her new bespoke work space. Important requirements included a specialist floor on which to work, additional head height and maximum wall space for hanging large canvasses, the right light (both natural and artificial) and some functional storage space for both art and garden equipment.

Details

As this studio was to sit within two meters of the boundary yet be greater than 2.5m in height, planning consent was required. We submitted the application on behalf of our client and were met with no objections. Prior to the build team arriving our client cleared the designated area of shrubs and a cherry tree. We are always happy to carry out any ground preparation work and in this instance we removed the existing garden shed, before commencing work on the foundations. The studio design was hard thought through, with our designer in close collaboration throughout the planning and build process. Rather than a SIPs (structured insulated panels) base, upon concrete pile foundations, the base of this studio was formed by a concrete slab. Onto this was poured a self-leveling latex compound which formed the perfect floor surface on which our client would work. Being a terraced house the large volume of concrete required, was delivered by lorry and expertly pumped through the house, down some steps and along the length of the garden! In order to maximise light whilst maintaining wall space, four light tubes were installed, interspersed between four specialist ceiling strip lights (Sylvania Luxline plus F70/865 Daylight deluxe). Good ventilation, hugely important for an art studio, was ensured by the inclusion of a top hung window to the rear of the studio and a half-height window to the side of the French doors, at the front. All windows and doors are double glazed (A rated, argon gas filled, toughened glass) within anthracite grey uPVC frames, with high security 5-point locking to doors and key operated locks to windows (all as standard). Our electrician installed a wall mounted convector heater, four double power sockets and an external light with PIR, to complete this stylish art studio.
