Summary

Our client needed a gym for her teenage son who is a rising star in the world of rugby. The gym needed to be a decent size with adequate space for free weights as well as various gym equipment. As with all gyms additional head height was also important, in this case not only for the equipment but to accommodate the main user's stature. A striking choice was that the studio cladding be fixed horizontally, making it more continental in style, as seen in the images.

Details

There are a few ways to achieve additional head height within a studio, whilst avoiding the requirement for planning consent. One option is to dig down and countersink the floor. Another option, not always possible, is to build the studio more than 2 metres away from the boundary line. At this distance a flat roof can reach an external height of 3 metres without planning (4 metres if it is a pitched roof). Luckily, for this build, there was adequate space to sit the gym away from the boundary. The studio was essentially a Helix specification with some chosen upgrades. Bespoke features of the design included powder coated aluminium extra height (2.2m) French doors and sliding doors (3m wide), 15 internal and 6 external down lighters and 7 double power sockets. A Hitachi Shirokuma A+ energy efficient climate control unit and wireless broadband via power cable were also installed. We offer a wide range of floor finishes but our standard flooring, as used here, is the preferred choice of many! It is an extremely durable 10mm V-groove laminate available in a number of colours. It is ideal for gyms, offices and high traffic areas and comes with a 25 year residential warranty. Overall, a striking studio gym designed with both function and comfort in mind.
