Summary

Creating additional work space is often a driver for investing in a garden spaces studio that is long lasting, maintenance free and exceptionally thermally efficient. These clients who run their own business, wanted to install an office in one corner of their garden. Their vision was for a studio with lots of natural light, large enough to provide functional work space with capacity for storage cabinets etc yet, not so big, that it dominated their garden. They also wanted it to blend well with the surrounding greenery.

Details

After surveying the site and discussing the requirements we designed this 3m by 4m studio. Though not easily spotted due to the perspective of these images the roof is covered with sedum. This 'living roof' ensures the studio blends beautifully with leafy surroundings whilst offering many benefits. As well as looking lovely, the sedum creates a great habitat for insects and birds. It gives added insulating properties, reducing noise inside the studio and moderating temperatures in winter and summer. It also absorbs up to 75% of the rainfall, releasing this slowly and so reducing pressure on drainage systems during heavy downpours. With its corner glazing and two high opening windows the office enjoys good light and ventilation regardless of time of year, whilst maintaining enough space for desks and furniture below. This specification was based on our standard helix model, plaster finished with skirting boards, three double power sockets and a consumer unit with RCD. All our glazing is A-rated argon filled with toughened glass, framed here with anthracite grey uPVC. The standard flooring is a 10mm V-groove laminate, ideal for high traffic areas and offices. You can choose from a number of styles and colours and it comes with a 25 year residential warranty. Our clients chose to upgrade from thermowood cladding to western red cedar and from strip lights to LED down lighters. This finished build over looks rather than dominates its surrounding garden and provides a warm, spacious and beautifully lit space in which to work.
