Summary

As keen musicians the Johnsons were seeking additional space in which to practice and with limited space within their home a garden music studio seemed a logical step to explore. As well as immediately adding more useable space our buildings can in many cases also add to the value of the property.
The new room would need to perform well acoustically in terms of both quality acoustics inside the building and in keeping sound levels down on the outside to avoid disturbing neighbours.
The building would be replacing a standard shed which was used to house garden equipment and so a solution was needed to include some storage space.
The bottom of the client's garden is a sun trap and therefore they were keen to ensure they would be able to use the space fully to enjoy the garden in the warm weather.

Details

Our design for the music room took into consideration the client's needs and featured a large decking area in front of the glazed frontage. The decked area provides an area to enjoy the sun while adding to the presence of the building, additionally the decking aids entry to the store area avoiding wear on the lawn with repeated access to the door.
With the building being overlooked by both the client's property and their neighbours a sedum roof was specified to help soften the visual impact. The natural roof also acts as a natural layer of insulation bringing both energy saving benefits as well as added acoustic improvements which with this project was a desirable addition.
The client opted to install our bronze level acoustic package which features double thickness acoustic plasterboard and specialised underlay. The upgraded glazing specified in the building also added to the high quality sound properties of the music room.
As well as standard power and lighting for the main room, we installed power to the storage space. The area included a cheaper upvc window which was used instead of aluminium to keep costs under control while bringing in light from the side of the building which is not seen from the rest of the garden. A sturdy boarded floor finished the storage room bringing the functionality of a shed while being housed within an attractive contemporary garden building.
