Three hours of gardening just as effective as an intense gym session, finds study

Our Solution

The average horticulturist gets almost all of their weekly amount of exercise by simply doing what they love best - by getting their hands dirty with a spot of gardening. Cited by dailymail.co.uk, a new poll finds that the typical gardener spends five hours per week on their hobby, burning up to 722 calories. Three hours of gardening equates to an intense hour-long gym session, meaning Brits can go achingly close to reaching the recommended two-and-a-half hours a week of exercise through doing something they love.   A study from netvouchercodes.co.uk saw a group of 100 gardeners monitoring the amount of time they spent on their activity over a four week period, with the researchers checking how many calories were burnt during their sessions. Researchers also looked at how much individual tasks were burning off, finding that just half an hour of weeding is worth 150 calories and all the lifting of equipment involved in hedge trimming burns off 400 calories per hour.   Someone meeting their weekly allocation of five hours in the garden burns around 18,772 calories a year, which works out around the same as running almost seven marathons - yet another reason for people to clean up the space around their garden offices.  Furthermore, gardeners usually keep up with their hobby until they're well over the age of 60, which means some could burn millions of calories in their lifetime. Commenting at netvouchercodes.co.uk, a spokesman from the company commented: "Most of us see spending time out in the garden as a leisurely job to do at weekends and during the spring and summer months.   "However it's fantastic to see just spending a day or five hours each week in the garden you can easily burn up to around 700 calories, giving gardeners a good workout too."
