Participating in garden ventures makes Brits feel 'grown up'

Summary

Participating in garden ventures, such as planting flowers and walking around garden centres, make Britons feel they have finally 'grown up'.

Our Solution

Participating in garden ventures, such as planting flowers and walking around garden centres, make Britons feel they have finally 'grown up'. These were just two of several garden-related activities which made the cut in the top 50 things which demonstrate a person's perceived transformation from youth to adult. Others in the poll of 2,000, cited by hortweek.com, included getting a mortgage, paying into a pension and having children. The foremost of these took the top spot - just ahead of not having mum and dad making financial decisions on their child's behalf. However, while some of these were life events, it was efforts in the garden that seemed to bring a unique sense of adulthood. Owning a lawnmower for example, came 15th in the poll, planting flowers (18th), enjoying gardening (28th) and visiting garden centres came in 32nd. Tidiness, whether that be in contemporary garden buildings or the home itself, was also a key indicator of adulthood. Those who considered themselves adult for getting annoyed at mess ranked in 23rd position. Tracy Fletcher, head of corporate communications at the Skipton Building Society - which conducted the poll - said that the top 50 makes for an "interesting" read. "Many of the indicators are things which people need to have mastered - such as looking after the house and garden, being able to cook and taking responsibility when it comes to personal finances," she explained. "But other factors are the key milestones in life - such as buying a house, getting married and having children - things which are happening at a later age due to economic circumstances, job security and so on."
