Tips on how to furnish your garden room

A garden room can be a great addition to your home - whether you're planning to use it as a gym, home office or just a peaceful, relaxing space.

Whatever you want to use it for, it can be tricky trying to furnish such a room - so here are some helpful ideas on how to make your garden room look nice and inviting all year round.

Let there be light

Garden rooms naturally let in lots of light - so make the most of it. Don't restrict it by using big bulky furniture or hanging things on the windows that will block it. Instead, pick smaller pieces of furniture that aren't going to create big shadows or make the room seem smaller than it is. In winter, the amount of natural light you'll receive will decline but nice warm lights will make the room seem attractive even during the harsh winter and late nights.

Create a relaxing space

A garden room is a space separate from your house and should therefore make a great getaway - even if you are partly using it as an office or gym. Purchase a large comfy chair or sofa with plenty of space for you or your friends to stretch out on when you just want to relax. You may also want to think about adding other luxury items - such as a big, furry rug or a pool table to play on after work. Some people even build in a fireplace or stove of some kind into their garden room, which will allow you to stay nice and warm in the evenings - especially in the winter.

In order to keep the clutter out, pick furniture pieces with concealed storage - this way you have plenty of places to keep your sketchbooks, notepads and other bits and pieces without them taking up too much room or looking untidy.

Take inspiration from popular trends

You may want to find your own sense of style but there's nothing wrong with looking at popular trends and taking inspiration from them. Next year's furniture trends include taking a big influence from ancient cultures such as the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. A luxury sofa with beautiful gold gilding and ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics could make a beautiful set piece and is bound to wow any guests, as well as make you feel like a king or queen.

Patterned furniture is also going to be big next year, which can be a great way to add a splash of colour to a white or cream coloured garden room. Floral patterns could work particularly well for a garden themed room.

Bring the garden inside

Although you might not necessarily want to make your garden room look like a shed, it can be a great idea to bring a part of the garden into the room. For example, you could add character to the room by displaying some of your favourite pots and plants on a designated shelf or around the room. To stick to the garden theme you might want to consider choosing cane furniture, adding cushions with floral prints on to really bring the outside inside.

The best way to furnish your garden room is to think about what you want to get out of it. Keeping it light, natural, airy and fresh is important if you want to create a home gym or office; but it might not be quite so ideal if you're planning to make your own cinema room. The most essential thing is to ensure everything is simple and minimal in order to get the best out of the extra space and to pick furniture that you really love and want to use all the time.
